Our Story
Wendy's interest in historic preservation spans more than two decades, including work experience in historic home renovations; as an architectural historian at Mason Architects, Inc.; the director of field services at Historic Hawaii Foundation; and the program assistant for the Historic Preservation Graduate Certificate Program at the University of Hawaiʻi. Preservation Associates was started by Wendy in 2003 to provide preservation technical services and research to support the goals of preservation professionals, environmental planners, real estate professionals, owners of historic properties, government agencies, and preservation nonprofits.
The historic Waimakua Homestead built by Wendy's grandmother, Juliet Rice Wichman, during the immediate post-World War II years.
Born and raised in Hawaiʻi, Wendy Wichman is the sixth generation of her family in the Islands. She attended Hanahauoli and Punahou Schools in Honolulu, spending summers at her grandmother's home at Haʻena on Kauaʻi. After graduating from Stanford University, Wendy went to work for U.S. Senator Spark Matsunaga in Washington, D.C. and later settled back in Honolulu to raise her family. She has four sons, daughter-in-laws, and three granddaughters, in addition to a large extended family. In her free time, she enjoys paddling outrigger canoes, surfing, and working on her historic cabin in the Koke'e State Park on Kaua'i.
